The body is remarkably resourceful. As we age, the body needs more nutrients and supplements to act the same as when we were younger.  It takes what it gets and it does the best that it can. Many take vitamins because they know they are not eating like they should, but even some of those people are taking too much. What they don’t realize is that when they are taking too much, the liver must work overtime to rid the body of what it can not use. Unlike storing energy for later, the body can not store vitamins. If they are not useful, they are discarded. Those who take advanced nutrients might be doing more harm than good.

Between foods and vitamins, it is hard to know if we are getting what we need, or if we are overdoing it. The average person might need a multivitamin, but that is about all they need. If they are taking advance nutrients, they may be overloading their liver, making it work harder than it has to. Even those that eat very poorly might be surprised to find out that they really don’t need all of those extra things you can get when you stock up on advanced nutrients. Not only could these harm the body, they can drain the pocketbook needlessly.

There are some who will benefit from advanced nutrients in many forms. Children are often ones who have problems with eating, and they can get some benefit. Athletes are often in need of something a little extra, though not all of them will need this. High school children are probably okay with a good, balanced diet and a vitamin, but those who train all day and play professionally might need something extra in the form of advance nutrients. Others with some diseases and illnesses might also benefit.

However, this is not something the average person can ascertain for themselves. When someone wishes to take advanced nutrients for any reason, they should have a long talk with their doctor about the possibility. It might even be wise to go over a person’s average menu to see what might be missing. A change in diet might negate the need to spend money on and taking advanced nutrients. A doctor knows the score, and they can recommend what you need while looking out for a person’s health all at the same time. A nutritionist can also help, and might be even more helpful than a doctor at times. As long as someone is keeping an eye on things, everything should be just fine.

Look for nutrition in the organic foods you eat as well as the supplements and vitamins you take.  A balanced approach to life is the best way to defy the aging process.

I was always intrigued by herbal remedies.  Could they improve my health?  How hard would it be to start incorporating herbs in my diet?

Then I started eating healthy with the aero herb garden

Several years ago I got myself onto a health food kick. Through a series of personal tragedies (both my best friend and my father died of heart disease) and some frank talks with my father in law, I decided it was time to grow up and give myself a chance to grow old and feeble and die, boringly, in my 80s.

First on the list was improving my eating habits. My father, god bless him, had never been the healthiest eater. Whether it was chicken wings or ribs or steak, if you could grill it, he’d eat it. It’s not like he avoided fruits and vegetables, but in general his favorite stuff was something that he could conceivably have hunted.

My best friend was almost pure carnivore, turning his nose up at anything that was grown (with the notable exception of the potato). His diet, his smoking habit and an unknown defect his one of the valves on his heart combined to due him in at the all-too-young age of twenty eight.

So I set myself on a quest to avoid their fate. Part of it, for me, was quitting smoking. I did this by cordoning off blocs of my life, and bit by bit limiting the time when I could have a cigarette. First it was “no smoking during the day”, then “no smoking during the work week”, then “no smoking unless you’re drinking,” and finally “you’re not buying cigarettes anymore.” Within the span of a year I’d quit.

After that, it was onto my diet. I’d developed a bit of a green thumb – something I’d inherited from my father, ironically – and wanted to put that to good use. As I was and still am pressed for space (living in New York City has lots of perks, but room isn’t one of them), the aero herb garden was a natural fit for my new and improved lifestyle.

The aero herb garden has been a big help for me now, several years after the tragedies I endured. Not only has the process of gardening given me a new, fulfilling hobby (seriously, gardening can actually be a lot of fun), but the aero herb garden has given me a steady supply of fresh vegetables and herbs that make any bland meal into a spectacular culinary delight.

And it’s paying off. I’ve droppped twenty five pounds in the last two years, thanks largely to my aero herb garden, and my cholesterol is down around 170 for the first time since I was a teenager. Yes, quitting smoking was the big step. But eating tons of fresh veggies and herbs is nearly as important.

Now I’m selling herbal supplements as part of a growing health food online business.  Life does come full circle

I am well aware of the health benefits of organic food, but I was wondering if most people can taste a difference between the two. I am also curious about the taste of organic meat (100% grass fed cows, no injected hormones/antibiotics, etc) vs regular meat.

I’ve been thinking of switching to eating organic because everyone says how healthy it is. But really, what’s so healthy about it? When you look at the back of labels of a lot of organic food, there’s so much fat, sugar, and sodium… which is NOT healthy.

So what is it? What’s so healthy or great about organic foods?
